A first edition of this wonderful design by Hasui. Depicted is "Kojaku" or "peacock" cavern, off the coast at the Oga peninsula of northern Japan. Hasui first captured this scene in his sketchbook in 1923, while travelling to the area in search for inspiration for his ongoing print series "Souvenirs of Travel". The transition from deep blue waters under the cavern's roof, to the bright sky reflecting on the open sea, is beautifully executed with rich colours. The sailboats in the distance, almost out of sight, are a signature of Hasui's style, hinting at the presence of civilisation while letting nature take the main stage.
