Hiroshige Utagawa (1797-1858)

Hiroshige Utagawa, born Andō Tokutarō in 1797 Edo, is celebrated as one of the greatest Japanese printmaking artists of the nineteenth century, alongside Katsushika Hokusai. The son of Ando Genemon, a fire warden, Hiroshige was thrust into the family's estate and responsibilities at the age of thirteen following the deaths of his parents. Despite these early burdens, Hiroshige pursued his passion for art, initially being turned away from the renowned Utagawa school and subsequently studying under Utagawa Toyohiro. This mentorship under Toyohiro was decisive, steering Hiroshige towards landscape art, a genre where he would leave an indelible mark.

Hiroshige's mastery is evident in his famed series such as "Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō" and "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo". These works not only showcase his innovative use of perspective and ability to invoke the essence of each location but also highlight his unique incorporation of atmospheric elements like weather and lighting, which added emotional depth to his landscapes. His approach greatly influenced Western impressionists, including Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet, who admired and drew inspiration from Hiroshige’s perspectives and compositional techniques. His prolific output, estimated at around 5400 prints, featured not just landscapes but also actor and beauty prints, as well as detailed depictions from life, such as in his "Fish Series".

Later in life, Hiroshige dedicated himself entirely to his art, producing significant works even as he dealt with personal losses and changes. His final major series, "One Hundred Famous Places of Edo", epitomised his lifelong observation and artistic portrayal of Edo. Sadly, Hiroshige died in 1858 before its completion, at the height of his artistic power. His legacy was continued by Hiroshige II, who completed the series. Hiroshige’s influence on both Japanese and Western art continues to be felt, cementing his status as a pivotal figure in the world of ukiyo-e.
