Heavy rain engulfs the onsen town of Kinosaki. Illustrated entirely through vertical streaks, this image showcases a much more expressive side of Hasui’s art, a breakaway from usual Shin Hanga norms. The repetitiveness of the showers and darkness of the night are interrupted by spots of warm, domestic light, reflecting on the puddles below. Two faceless figures, one holding an ambrella and another pulling a cart, cross paths in the rain.
This is a first edition of the design as indicated by the round Watanabe publisher’s seal in the bottom left corner, and the series seal reading “Souvenirs of Travel, third Volume”. Also featured is a rare “Tokubetsusen” or “special edition” seal, indicating an exceptional example of the print personally gifted by Watanabe.
