New Moon
Artist: Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-1950)
Date: 1941 (Jizuri) , Shin Hanga
Size: 40.2 x 27.3 cm
Condition: Excellent impression, colour and overall condition. Faint adhesive residue on the top corners of the reverse side, otherwise no flaws to note.
A thin, crescent moon rises above the harbour, its bright silhouette emerging between the masts. Hiroshi Yoshida often used sailboats as a subject to explore rich, subtle colour effects. The vast sky stretches into the water below, serving as a blank canvas on which Yoshida’s masterful use of Bokashi gradation truly shines. The sailboats’ presence gives a human touch to the scene, with two sailors attending to one of the vessels.
This is an early lifetime edition as indicated by Yoshida's "Jizuri" or "Self Printed" seal, and pencil signature on the lower margin. A comparable edition can be found in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution.
